“Unlikely Muses” is an interactive website that challenges fundamental assumptions about AI creativity by exploring how meaningful innovation might emerge from seemingly-unrelated conceptual combinations. While contemporary language models generate outputs based on statistical probability, this work investigates the creative potential that lies in the semantic distances between ideas.
Inspired by Margaret Boden’s theory of combinational creativity, the project manifests as an interactive web installation where visitors navigate a three-dimensional latent space of artistic concepts. By utilizing the vast knowledge embedded within large language models while deliberately pairing semantically distant ideas, the system generates unexpected artwork descriptions that transcend conventional approaches to AI creativity.
Through this fusion of structured exploration and deep neural knowledge, the project questions whether artificial intelligence can be guided toward the kind of surprising associations and conceptual leaps that characterize human creative breakthroughs, rather than remaining bound by predictable patterns.
