Women worldwide face discrimination and oppression, and in China, these challenges are compounded by governmental censorship and deep-rooted Confucian ideology. Events like the #MeToo movement and incidents of sexual violence are often silenced by authorities, and cultural norms discourage women from speaking out. Despite this, social media has brought more attention to these issues, although many posts are quickly censored. Notable cases, such as the violent assault in Tangshan in July 2022, highlight the pervasive nature of gender-based violence. Inspired by Peter Kuper’s wordless comic “The System,” this graphic novel aims to expose the systemic oppression of women in China. Through interconnected, wordless storytelling, it reveals the hidden struggles women endure, hoping to spark greater awareness and change.
