The issue of diversity in the film industry has always been a hot but unarguable topic. Much debates nowadays focus on how Oscar lacks diverse. However, it seems insufficient to target only on an award primarily for the US industry but neglect the actual diversity of those celebrated international awards, such as the “Big Three” film festivals: Berlin, Cannes, and Venice).

Thus, this data visualization intends to present the diversity of some of the most renowned film festivals worldwide — the “Big Three” Festivals.

Developing Process & Design

This project aims to make apparent the diversity of nominated directors in the main competition in terms of gender, geographic regions, and the intersectionality of the first two features.

Users should be able to filter through each of the three film festivals and all three as a whole.
